An Actor- Perspective Ontological framework for Student Evaluation Processing Lifecycle in Higher Education
The Student Evaluation Processing Lifecycle (SEPL) in higher education is a complex, multi-stage process involving diverse stakeholders, roles, and decision-making structures. However, existing models largely focus on outcomes rather than the interactions, governance, and responsibilities of actors involved—leading to challenges in transparency, accountability, and digital transformation.
This study introduces an Actor Perspective Ontological Framework (APOF) to address these limitations. The framework provides a structured and systematic representation of all actors, their roles, interactions, and activities within SEPL—particularly in the context of Higher Education Institutions (HEIs), with a focus on Sri Lanka.
Using a hybrid research methodology combining Design Science, Behavioral Science, and Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis, the study validates the framework’s accuracy, consistency, and completeness through expert evaluation and documentary evidence. Key Contributions: Establishes a comprehensive ontology for student evaluation processes Enhances transparency, accountability, and traceability Reduces ambiguity in evaluation workflows Supports the development of digital and IT-enabled SEPL systems This research provides a strong foundation for designing structured, consistent, and technology-driven student evaluation systems, advancing governance and innovation in higher education.
